With the U.S. roster finally released, many soccer fans are buzzing with excitement as the World Cup quickly approaches. Included in the U.S. World Cup roster was a familiar face for South Jerseyans — Brenden Aaronson. Born in October 2000, the midfielder grew up in Medford, where he picked up the nickname “Medford Messi.” While in South Jersey, he played for NJ Real and Medford SC. America 250 events: South Jersey set to celebrate America 250 around Fourth of July After attending Shawnee High School for a year, Aaronson switched to the Philadelphia Union’s YSC Academy, a private school for elite soccer student-athletes. Throughout his professional career, Aaronson played for Bethlehem Steel FC, the Philadelphia Union, Red Bull Salzburg and his current team, Leeds United F.C. This year, he tallied four goals and five assists for the Premier League team.
In 2022, Aaronson earned a spot on the U.S. World Cup team, playing in every match of the game and helping the team reach Round 16. Now, he returns to the United States team for yet another World Cup. Alongside him is Matt Turner, another New Jersey native from Bergen County. “As we prepare to host the World Cup, we’re proud to see two Jersey natives on the U.S. Men’s National Team,” New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill said in a social media post. “Congratulations to Matt Turner and Brenden Aaronson on earning spots to represent America on the world stage!”
